Headlight Relays & Switches

311941531A Headlight Switch:

VW Bug 1958-67,
VW Ghia 1958-67,
VW Bus 1968-70,
VW Type 3 1963-67.

Replacing the Headlight Switch (and most all the VW Switches) is very simple. The headlight terminals are numbered, their designations are:

30 - Battery Power from the Main Wiring Harness
- Battery Power to the Ignition Switch
- Battery Power to the Fuse Box
56 - Power to the Floor Dimmer Switch or Headlight Relay
57 - Power to Front Running Lights - NOT FUSED!
- We omit this wire nowadays and run the lights off the 58 terminal on the Fuse Box
58 - Power to the Running Light Terminal on the Fuse Box
58b - Power to the Dash Bulbs

VW Factory Color Coding:
30 - Red
56 - White or White w/Black Stripe
57 - Grey
58 - Grey
58b - White w/Red Stripe


111941561B Headlight Dimmer Switch:

VW Bug 1958-65,
VW Ghia 1956-65,
VW Bus 1950-65.

Replacing the Floor Dimmer Switch (and most all the VW Switches) is very simple. The switch terminals are numbered, their designations are:

56 - Power to the Floor Dimmer Switch
56a - Power to High Beams
56b - Power to Low Beams

VW Factory Color Coding:
56 - White or White w/Black Stripe
56a - White
56b - Yellow


111941583 Headlight Dimmer Relay,12V 5 prong:

Fits All 12 Volt VW's.

Note: Use with cars that have been converted to 12 volt.
The wiring terminal designations for the VW Headlight Relay is:

56 - Power from the Headlight Switch
56a - Power to the High Beam Terminal on the Fuse Box
56b or "F" - Power to the Low Beam Terminal on the Fuse Box
30 - Power from 56 terminal
S - Momentary Ground from Turn Signal Switch

The relay MUST HAVE POWER to the #30 terminal to operate. If your wiring does not have a power wire to the #30 terminal a "jumper" wire can be run from the #56 terminal to the #30 terminal.

VW Factory Color Coding:
56 - White with Black Stripe
56a - White
56b or "F" - Yellow
S - Brown with White Stripe
30 - Red

Replacing the Headlight Switch (and most all the VW Switches) is very simple. The headlight terminals are numbered, their designations are:

30 - Battery Power from the Fuse Box
30 - 2nd 30 terminal not typically used
56 - Power to Headlight Relay
58 - Power to the Running Light Terminal on the Fuse Box
X - Power from the Ignition Switch (NO LONGER USED)
58b - Power to the Dash Bulbs

NOTE: The current Super Beetle headlight switch DOES NOT use the "X" terminal. You can tape off or trace the wire back to the ignition switch and remove the wire from the harness. The "X" terminal originally was used so the headlights would not turn on unless the key was turned on.
