Replacing the Ignition Switch (and most all the VW Switches) is very simple. The switch terminals are numbered, their designations are:

30 - Battery Power from the Headlight Switch
15/54 - Power to the Fuse Box
50 - Power to the Starter

30 - Red

Replacing the Ignition Switch is very simple, especially on the 71 and later model VWs where the Ignition Switch originally has a wiring connector that plugs into the Ignition Switch. If your connector is missing the switch terminals are numbered so not a major issue. You can run individual wires to the appropriate terminal. Their designations are:

1/4" Terminals
30 - Battery Power from the Headlight Switch
15 - Power to the Fuse Box
50 - Power to the Starter
X - Power To the Headlight Switch
1/8" Terminals Not Typically Used
P - Parking Position Power (NOT USED)
S - Ground Wire for Ignition Buzzer (Not typically used)
