If you've installed a 2" narrowed beam in your 1954 through 1965 Link Pin, or 1966 through April 1968 ball joint Beetle or Karmann Ghia, shorter tie rods are needed because of the narrower front end. You can cut your existing tie rods down and re-thread the ends, or you can order the pre-shortened tie rod set that comes with shorter tie rod sleeves and all 4 tie rod ends. 1954 through 1959 models that don't have a steering damper won't utilize the steering damper hole on the inner right tie rod end.
Note:
Volkswagen began using larger tie rod ends in May of 1968. If you have your original tie rods on hand, the easiest way to determine if you have an early '68 or later '68 is to measure the nut of the tie rod end. If it is a 17mm nut, you have 1965 to April 1968 tie rods. If it is a 19mm nut at the end, it is a late '68 model and needs the later style tie rod ends.
