The VW Headlight Switch installs into the dash with a 10mm dash nut escutcheon and has a 5mm threaded post for a knob (sold separately, available above). The headlight knob has 3 positions (off / parking-running lights / headlights-running lights) as well as a rheostat control (twist the knob at the second or third position) to dim or brighten the dash lights. The headlight switch fits 1958 through 1967 Beetles, 1958 through 1967 Karmann Ghias, 1968 through 1970 Type 2 Bus models, and non-push button 1962 through 1973 Type 3s. The switch operates on 6 and 12 volt systems.

Replacing the Headlight Switch (and most all the VW Switches) is very simple. The headlight terminals are numbered, their designations are:

30 - Battery Power from the Main Wiring Harness
- Battery Power to the Ignition Switch
- Battery Power to the Fuse Box
56 - Power to the Floor Dimmer Switch or Headlight Relay
57 - Power to Front Running Lights - NOT FUSED!
- We omit this wire nowadays and run the lights off the 58 terminal on the Fuse Box
58 - Power to the Running Light Terminal on the Fuse Box
58b - Power to the Dash Bulbs

VW Factory Color Coding:
30 - Red
56 - White or White w/Black Stripe
57 - Grey
58 - Grey
58b - White w/Red Stripe
