VW Type 3 1968-70
VW Thing 1973-74
This model can also used for 1966 & earlier models that have been converted to 12 volt systems. Replacing the Turn Signal Relay is very simple. The terminals are labeled, their designations are:
49 - Power from the Fuse Box
49a - Power to the Turn Signal Switch
31 - Chassis Ground
KBL - Power to the Flasher Bulb
NOTE: If the Turn Signal Indicator Bulb does not blink when the turn signals are on, move the wire from the KBL terminal to the 49a terminal (use a piggyback or jumper connection) with the Black/White/Green wire.

VW Factory Color Coding:
49 - Black
49a - Black w/White and Green Stripe
31 - Brown
KBL - Blue w/Red Stripe

141953517C VW Turn Signal Switch, (Valeo):
VW Bug 1962-65VW Ghia 1961-65
Replacing the Turn Signal Relay is very simple there are only 2 wires! The terminals are labeled, their designations are:
Black White Green Wire: 49a OR "L" Terminal on Flasher Relay
Blue Jumper Wire (on Bk/Wh/Gn wire): K3 bulb in Speedometer
(the turn signal indicator bulb)
Black wire with White Stripe: Power to left turn signals
Black wire with Green Stripe: Power to right turn signals
141953517F VW Turn Signal Switch, Black:
VW Bug 1966-67VW Ghia 1966-67
The VW Turn Signal Switch wiring is a very simple circuit. even with the 66-67 Switches controlling the Headlight Relay. The designations for the wires are:
Black White Green Wire: 49a OR "L" Terminal on Flasher Relay
Black wire with White Stripe: Power to left turn signals
Black wire with Green Stripe: Power to right turn signals
Brown wire with Jumper: Ground Terminal on Body
Brown wire with White Stripe: "S" Terminal on Headlight Relay
311953513B VW Turn Signal Switch:
VW Bug 1968-70VW Ghia 1968-70
VW Type 3 1968-69
The VW Turn Signal Switch wiring is a very simple circuit, even with the switch controlling the Headlight Relay. The designations for the wires are:
Black White Green Wire: 49a OR "L" Terminal on Flasher Relay
Blue Jumper Wire (on Bk/Wh/Gn wire): K3 bulb in Speedometer
(the turn signal indicator bulb)
Black wire with White Stripe: Power to left turn signals
Black wire with Green Stripe: Power to right turn signals
Brown wire with Jumper: Ground Terminal on Speedometer Mounting Screw
Brown Jumper wire: to 31 Terminal on Wiper Switch
Brown wire with White Stripe: "S" Terminal on Headlight Relay
NOTE: The 3 GREY WIRES ARE DUPLICATES AND ARE NOT USED. We typically cut them at the switch and remove them before installation.

VW Beetle 1972-78VW Super Beetle 1972-79
VW Ghia 1972-74
VW Type 3 1972-74
VW Thing 1973-74
Installing the turn signal switch is pretty easy. It is modular and clips into the Windshield Wiper Switch. The wiring runs down the steering column and plugs into the turn signal harness "pigtail". The factory color codes for the wires on the pigtail are:
Black/White/Green - 49a Terminal on Turn Signal Relay
Black/White - Left Turn Signal Harness 4 way Plug
Black/Green - Right Turn Signal Harness 4 way Plug
Brown - Chassis Ground Tab on body
Brown/White - "S" Terminal on Headlight Relay
Brown - Ground Signal to Horn Wire Harness
Note: If you turn on the ignition and the horn is on, the two brown wires are reversed.
