1973 VW Super Beetle

Donna Fretwell

I purchased my beautiful 1973 Super Beetle on January 25th, 2019. She joins my newer Beetle, a 2013 yellow TDI. I’ve loved Bugs and Volkswagens ever since I was little, probably because we would play “punch bug“ on long family car trips. My family and I then got into going to car shows and starting attending the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Crusin’ the Coast every October.

My dad then restored a Pontiac Firebird. So, I got to thinking about getting a classic Beetle. I had seen very few of these cars represented and thought that they needed a little more Volkswagen love. I looked for awhile and stumbled across this beautiful car about three hours from my house. While my father or myself knew nothing about how these cars worked, I purchased it from a guy in Paw Paw, West Virginia and brought her home late on a Friday night.

She was originally purchased by her original owner in April 1973 in Kansas. While she’s had her many quirks and we’ve had plenty of learning experiences, she’s running very well. Now, she’s joined my dad’s Pontiac for the past two years to the Mississippi Crusin’ the Coast car show.

Over the past few years, I’ve made new friends in the Volkswagen community and learned a lot about these beautiful cars. I’ve even recently added another beautiful Volkswagen to my collection, a 1970 Bay Window Bus who needs a lot more work than my Super Beetle did — she only has the body, a transmission, and some of her windows and nothing else. I’ve got plenty more knowledge to gain and friends to be made in the future and hopefully even some more Volkswagens to join this beautiful Super Beetle! I am hoping to keep these beautiful cars alive for many, many years to come!
