David Tompkins's 1968 Dune Buggy

1968 Dune Buggy

I purchased this 1968 Dune Buggy in 2015 on a whim, I was on my way to DMV and saw this recognizable shape underneath a decaying tarp parked in some guys driveway and I Immediately hooked a U-turn to go back and inquire about this hidden gem. I hurriedly walked up to take a peak and as sure as you know what, IT WAS A DUNEBUGGY!

I was so stoked as I had always wanted one as a child. That came from the early 70's Disney movie called "Now you see him, now you don't" with a young Kurt Russel who portrayed a college science student who drove a blue dune buggy in the movie. I wanted that car! Then came the TV cartoon called "Speed Buggy" with teenagers who drove it around and the car was their friend as it spoke, complained, and pooped out from being too tired. I really wanted that car and there it was.

The fella that owned it was a retired CHP guy who drove it around Pismo Beach, CA and was willing to sell it to me as his wife wanted him to start getting rid of various vehicle on his property. Lucky me as he was going to place an add to sell it. We talked and came to a fair price. My wife wasn't too keen on the idea, but because I never really ask for anything she said, "that will be your retirement car." And with that, the almost forgotten Dune Buggy came home with me.

The car has since been restored with a fresh 1600cc DP engine, electrical wiring, vintage style Stewart Warner gauges, shortened windshield, 205mm slot mags fatties in the rear, narrow ones up front, new seats, rear camber compensator, cylinder fuel tank, 14 coats of candy, base, clear, and "Ed Roth" flake to make it totally pop on those sunny California days.

It's taken me almost 7 years to complete the restoration as I just did a little here and a little bit there and with patience. It won first place in the 2023 Solvang Car Show. I was really proud. The time, money, and efforts paid off. The wife and I drive it as often as we can with weather permitting.
