The VW Ignition Switch is a replacement 6 terminal unit for 1972 through early 1974 Beetles (1142358021), 1972 through early 1974 Super Beetles (1342358021/1542358021), 1972 though early 1974 Karmann Ghias (1442358021), 1972 through 1973 Type 3s and 1973 through early 1974 Things (1842356315). The ignition switch installs in the bottom of the steering column lock assembly and is held in place with a very tiny set screw (which is not made new so don't lose it!). The switch is hooked up by plugging in the factory ignition switch subharness, click on the "Tech Tips" tab for more wiring installation information.

Replacing the Ignition Switch is very simple, especially on the 71 and later model VWs where the Ignition Switch originally has a wiring connector that plugs into the Ignition Switch. If your connector is missing the switch terminals are numbered so not a major issue. You can run individual wires to the appropriate terminal. Their designations are:

1/4" Terminals
30 - Battery Power from the Headlight Switch
15 - Power to the Fuse Box
50 - Power to the Starter
X - Power To the Headlight Switch
1/8" Terminals Not Typically Used
P - Parking Position Power (NOT USED)
S - Ground Wire for Ignition Buzzer (Not typically used)

VW Factory Color Coding:
30 - Red
15 - Black
50 - Black w/Red Stripe
X - Black w/Yellow Stripe at Ignition Switch. Changes to Red w/Black at Headlight Switch harness
