The 2 Speed VW Windshield Wiper Switch will fit late model 1971-1974 Beetles (up to VIN 114 2358 021), Super Beetles (up to VIN 134 2358 021) and Karmann Ghias (up to VIN 144 2358 021) as well as 1973 to 1974 Things (up to VIN 184 2019 428). 1971 was a split year with early models using a dash mounted wiper switch, late model 1971s have a wiper switch on the steering column. The wiper switch has 3 positions; off-on-on, for two speed wiper motors (see Tech Tips for wiring information) and is modular, as it connects with the turn signal switch before being installed in the steering column. The wiper switch also has the pneumatic diaphragm for the windshield washer nozzle which is operated by pulling back on the lever. The wiring connector for the wiper switch ends with 4, .110 male connections which plug into the steering column wiring harness.

Installing the turn signal switch is pretty easy. It is modular and clips into the Turn Signal Switch. The wiring runs down the steering column and plugs into the Wiper Switch Harness "pigtail".

The factory color codes for the wires on the pigtail are:
Black - Terminal 53
Black/White - 53a
Black/Yellow - 53b
Green - 53e

VW Wiper Motor & Switch Terminal Definitions:
30 - POWER FROM FUSE BOX
31 - CHASSIS GROUND
31B - SWITCHED GROUND TO WIPER SWITCH (Used on 1971 and earlier wiper motors/switches)
53A - PARK POSISTION (54 on early model wiper motors/switches)
53 - SPEED 1 (54D on early model wiper motors/switches)
53B - SPEED 2
53E - Wiper Brake Winding (only used on late model switches and motors)

Some wiper switches or motors may have only 2 or 3 terminals. Wire up your original motor to the terminals or their cross over number listed above.
