1968-79 VW Type 2 Drop Spindles
- Lowers your Type 2 Bus by 2 inches while maintaining stock suspension geometry
- Designed to replace original spindles without modification
- Compatible with stock shocks
Type 2 1968-79 Drop Spindles fit 1968 and later Type 2 Bus models. 1968 through 1972 Type 2s must use 1973 & later brake rotors, calipers, etc. The brand new, (not re-manufactured) drop spindles will lower your Bus 2" while keeping the same suspension geometry and maintaining the stock ride. The drop spindles are designed to replace your original spindles without modification. Drop spindles will lower your Bus so a smaller tire may be necessary. These drop spindles are made for use with stock shocks. For 1968 through 1971 drum brake models, new wheels will be needed as the drop spindles require 5x112 lug pattern brake rotors.
Important notes:
- Not compatible with 5x205mm disc brake conversion kits
- Smaller tires may be required as the spindles will lower the Bus
- 1968 through 1970 and 1971 Buses with front drum brakes (5x205 lug pattern) will have to change the front wheels to a 5x112 pattern wheel
- The original dust shields are not compatible with the drop spindles
Wheel compatibility:
The stock 14" 5x112 wheels are compatible with the drop spindles, as are the following aftermarket wheels:
- 10-1082 Gasser
- 10-1084 Cosmo
- 9731 Chrome BRM
- 9697 Black BRM
- 9694 Chrome 911
- 9728 Black 911
- 9749 Dish
To install matching rear wheels the stock drum will have to be drilled for the 5x112 pattern, and press in studs can be installed. Or the 1971 and later 5x112 brake system (backing plates, brake shoes, wheel cylinders, hubs and drums) can be sourced from a wrecking yards and installed.
Additional parts required for installation:
- 1968-1972 models:
- 1968-1970 models:
- 1971-79 Type 2 Front Brake Rotor Hubs x2
- Use stock inner and outer bearings and wheel seals
- Non-servo (no vacuum booster) master cylinder is recommended and includes a new brake fluid reservoir
Tire compatibility:
Drop spindles require shorter, smaller-diameter tires to prevent rubbing. While stock tires may seem to fit when parked, they will rub during normal driving, particularly with heavier loads. For the best results, use the recommended tire sizes to avoid clearance issues.
