The KYB Excel-G (formerly GR-2) Shock absorber fits the front of lowered 1954 through 1965 Beetles and 1956 through 1965 Karmann
Ghias. The twin tubed nitrogen charged shock has an overall length of shock is 15.28", the compressed length is 9.76" and the shock
has a stroke length of 5.51". EMPI # 97-1019
Lowered shocks are only required for cars dropped more than 3" below stock ride height. Installing dropped spindles does not necessitate changing to lowered shocks.
The eyelets at the upper and lower ends of the shock have a 12mm (just under 1/2") inner diameter sleeve. The mount on the trailing
arm should measure about 11.9mm (just over 7/16").If the hole is "too small" to fit on the lower mount, then the old shock sleeve
has rusted in place and must be removed. Sometimes a pair of vice grips is all it takes, sometimes heat, a chisel or even a cut off
wheel have been needed.
California Prop 65 Warning:
Please Note:The information listed below is for stock, unmodified VW's manufactured for sale in the US. VW's are commonly modified and very often parts from another year VW may have been installed on your car. California Pacific JBugs is not responsible for any errors if your car has been modified in any way.
When installing a new shock absorber on the front of your VW, make sure that the old shock sleeve is removed. The bolt that the shock absorber bolts to IS NOT a shouldered bolt. The shaft of the bolt has roughly the same outer diameter of the threaded area. If the old shock sleeve is rusted in place, use a pair of vice grips to break it free and remove it.
