The Chrome Plated Internally Regulated 90 Amp Alternator is the perfect choice for those with high output ignition systems, large stereos or lots of off road lights. The 90 amp internally regulated alternator can be used on 1961 through 1977 Standard Beetles, 1971 through 1979 Super Beetles, 1960 through 1971 Type 2 Bus models and 1973 through 1974 Things. The wiring for the alternator has to be modified as it is internally regulated. See the "Tech Tips" tab for more information regarding the conversion. 1966 and earlier models will require a different stand, backing plate and pulley as the 6 volt units are not compatible with the alternator. 1967 and later models that use a generator may have to swap the stand as the stock generator stand can not be used with the new alternator.

If you are converting a car that currently has a generator over to an alternator, consider on of our Alternator Conversion Kits which include an Internally Regulated Alternator, a new alternator stand, alternator strap and 3 piece backing plate kit.

This alternator is internally regulated!

• If your VW has an externally regulated alternator, it will not be reused and your wiring must be modified.
• If your VW has a generator, the original voltage regulator for it must be removed and the wiring for it must be modified.

Chrome Maintenance and What to Expect:

We put this notice on all chrome products, regardless of manufacturer, or origin.

Chrome plating is an electro-plating process that is highly regulated due to the environmental impacts of the chemicals, metals, and the exhaust gasses released during the process.

We highly recommend maintaining any chrome on your vehicle by applying a car wax or detailing spray on a regular basis

Here are some additional tips:

  • Hubcaps - Spray paint the inside with paint or rust inhibitor, wax chrome finish regularly
  • Bumpers - Spray paint the inside with paint or rust inhibitor, wax chrome finish regularly
  • Exterior Mirrors - Lightly wax chrome finish regularly
  • Exterior Chrome Trim - Lightly wax chrome finish regularly

If you properly maintain the chrome and keep your car stored in a dry, non-salty-air environment, the chrome will last.

VW Alternator Conversion Wiring

For an internally regulated alternator to operate, the D+ terminal must be wired to the negative side of a warning light bulb. A standard, incandecsent light bulb must be used. An LED light does not draw enough current to turn on the regulator in the alternator. The positive side of the light bulb should be powered by a key hot circuit.
