The KYB Gas-a-Just Shock absorber fits the front of 1954 through 1965 Standard Beetles, 1956 through 1965 Karmann Ghias, 1955 through 1979 Type 2 Bus models and 1962 through 1973 Type 3s. The overall length of shock is 16.26", the compressed length is 10.55" and the shock has a stroke length of 5.71". The KYB Gas-A-Just monotube design offers a more responsive ride and automatically adjusts to driving conditions with a firmer ride. EMPI # 97-1011

The eyelets at the upper and lower ends of the shock have a 12mm (just under 1/2") inner diameter sleeve. The mount on the trailing arm should measure about 11.9mm (just over 7/16").If the hole is "too small" to fit on the lower mount, then the old shock sleeve has rusted in place and must be removed. Sometimes a pair of vice grips is all it takes, sometimes heat, a chisel or even a cut off wheel have been needed.

When installing a new shock absorber on the front of your VW, make sure that the old shock sleeve is removed. The bolt that the shock absorber bolts to IS NOT a shouldered bolt. The shaft of the bolt has roughly the same outer diameter of the threaded area. If the old shock sleeve is rusted in place, use a pair of vice grips to break it free and remove it.
