Upgraded Accelerator Pedal - Installed by JBugs:

Video Overview:

We're back in the shop at work for an unplanned upgrade on the 1967 Sunroof Beetle with a first view of EMPI's upgraded, ball bearing equipped, Accelerator Pedal Kit. Sam is a fan of stock style accelerator pedals in lieu of the often installed "roller" pedals. Roller pedals are commonly installed because the stock accelerator pedal linkage wears out and the accelerator pedal starts to get clunky or notchy. EMPI has engineered a new roller lever with a sealed long life bearing equipped roller, that mounts to an upgraded lever. The upgraded Accelerator Pedal Kit includes a replacement pedal pad, pedal, and the exclusive EMPI lever, roller bearing, and mounting hardware. The accelerator pedal kit will improve the feel and engagement of the throttle for improved drive-ability and smoother acceleration. EMPI's upgraded Accelerator Pedal Kit fits 1967 through 1977 Standard Beetles, 1971 through 1979 Super Beetles, 1967 through 1974 Karmann Ghias and 1973 through 1974 Things. Follow along as Sam installs the Accelerator Pedal Kit and covers the minor modifications needed and then takes the pedal for a test drive!

Video Tips:

0:00 hi guys Sam jbugs.com we're back again 0:02 in the shop here at 0:07 work at work on the 1967 Beetle you guys 0:10 haven't seen this in a little bit cuz 0:12 well we've been busy on a lot of things 0:14 since the New Year and that period uh 0:16 doing a lot of work at home uh after 0:18 hours uh on Nathan's car here at work uh 0:21 not a whole lot's changed still have the 0:23 uh the unassembled long block that we 0:25 need to finish turning into a running 0:27 engine of course we got the 67 we still 0:29 have plans with back over there we've 0:31 got uh that damaged aluminum engine case 0:34 and a whole bunch of products 84 mm 0:36 flange crankshaft 92 mm thick wall 0:40 pistons and cylinders Strokers of course 0:42 uh so we're going to build a large 0:45 engine if anybody is really good with 0:46 numbers an 84 by 92 or 92x 84 depending 0:50 on which way way you want to go with it 0:51 uh that's going to be a 2234 engine 0:53 we're going to build that thing into 0:55 over here we've got a gram scale ring 0:57 grinder flap wheels and stuff like that 0:59 so I can go through and end weight our 1:02 connecting rods we can make certain that 1:04 our Pistons are uh all match weighted 1:06 same thing on the connecting rods that's 1:08 why we got all that stuff but today 1:10 we're here to work on this little guy 1:12 right here foot pedal assembly upgraded 1:16 the biggest upgrade of course is this 1:18 heavy duty lever with ball bearing 1:20 equipped roller and a flatbed 1:23 accelerator pedal with a thicker pin 1:26 here more strength and much smoother 1:30 throttle actuation let's get to it so 1:33 we're going to take that amp kit and get 1:35 that installed with that upgraded pedal 1:37 which involves jacking the car up 1:39 loosening the clutch cable then we can 1:41 go inside pull off our access plate on 1:43 the back side of the tunnel disconnect 1:45 the clutch cable pull out the pedal 1:47 assembly bring it over the bench make uh 1:49 one small modification is all that 1:51 should take I believe depending on if 1:53 it's got the the little arm on the back 1:55 side of the accelerator pedal we'll take 1:56 a look at that if that's there we'll cut 1:58 that out but other than that it's a 2:00 pretty much a bolt on a 2:06 fair and we'll come in here and we'll 2:08 note where 2:10 our six 2:12 shooter clutch cable adjustment nut is 2:14 at and how much cable sticking out of it 2:17 or so we can get it back in the same 2:18 place when we put everything back 2:20 together so I'm going to disconnect that 2:22 real quick so you guys can see how nice 2:24 it is to use this six shooter clutch 2:27 cable adjustment that 2:30 you ever seen a clutch cable adjust that 2:32 easy these things are so nice and this 2:36 is the stain in the steel one I want to 2:38 drop this thing on my face 2:43 buto I don't know where the heck it went 2:46 but oh there it is there we go six 2:49 shooter stainless steel clut adjustment 2:52 nut super super nice and we'll come pull 2:56 out our AIS 2:58 plate 3:00 we've got that pulled out clutch cables 3:03 disconnected um you know what probably 3:05 should uh disconnect our throttle cable 3:09 let's see if I can do that by hand in 3:12 here yep I can sweet don't have to worry 3:15 about 3:16 that then you know what this time I'm 3:18 going to grab my 3:28 glasses 3:30 that and 3:31 that I 3:33 guess we'll make life easy and 3:35 disconnect the brake pedal rod with all 3:38 that 3:39 disconnected clip for our brake pedal 3:41 push rod spring disconnected brake pedal 3:44 push rod 3:46 disconnected 3:48 and perhaps 3:50 maybe I can have my pedal assembly up 3:52 there we 3:53 go just like so p l is out all right six 3:58 and a half millimeters basically 4:00 equivalent to/ quarter inch we got all 4:03 that we've got our pedal assembly we'll 4:05 pound out that pin and here we can see 4:07 the stock or accelerated lever it's only 4:10 got one pivot here this will actually 4:13 end up doubling up that pivot to give it 4:15 more 4:17 stability that came out by hand probably 4:19 because I cleaned this thing up earlier 4:21 all right so that's our stock lever 4:24 which gets upgraded with a double 4:26 pivoting lever much more cure on its 4:30 axis also got to push out this 4:36 pin and you can see that the upgraded 4:40 shoulder bolt doesn't fit our stock 4:42 pedal and our stock pedal has this ramp 4:45 that even that ramp is off AIS so that's 4:48 why this roller had to be wide and if 4:52 this gets bent out of shape or this 4:55 roller gets worn out and this is just a 4:59 plastic roller all this starts to get 5:01 very clunky not going to be a problem 5:03 anymore we've got to drill this out the 5:06 quarter in drill 5:10 bit slightly larger than a quarter inch 5:13 but we'll 5:14 uh we'll 5:17 get through them both yeah 26 so Next 5:22 Step Up is I'm guessing this is 5:26 1764 seems about right 1764 5:30 is our neck size 5:38 up and with 5:44 that the minest amount of play so again 5:48 a 6 and a half millimeter is what they 5:50 claim it to be if you can get a 6 and 5:52 half millimeter drill bit you'll 5:54 probably be better off but 17 64s will 5:57 do so now the question is is whether or 5:59 not not oh yep I'm pretty sure we're 6:02 going need to knock that guy off but 6:04 let's find out that guy attaches to 6:06 there this guy goes through 6:09 here that that 6:11 way no modification needed on that style 6:15 so if your Stop's way back there we're 6:18 good to go and the nice thing is is 6:20 because this have some some heft to it 6:22 that uh you can really feel how solid 6:25 and smooth it is very nice all right so 6:31 let's do that that that that and that 6:34 one thing I saw that was going to be 6:35 kind of a pain is getting this spring 6:38 fed into that hole so let me grab a pair 6:40 of needl noose pliers and see that makes 6:44 anything easier imagine it probably 6:46 should yeah you know what I'm just going 6:49 to ever so slightly Bend this tab out to 6:54 give me some room to put that spring in 6:56 place ah easy peasy glum and squeezy 7:00 and then we'll tap it 7:04 back good as gold got to be up past that 7:09 step there we 7:15 go 7:17 nice all right that's that that's 7:24 that that's 7:26 that too many tools in the way 7:31 all right and there we 7:36 go we'll get a 13 mm wrench tighten that 7:39 down and this does have a NY 7:42 loock oh here that not quite as good as 7:46 a German bearing from my skateboarding 7:48 days 7:50 but and this a upgrade in the sense that 7:53 we didn't actually have a rubber pad on 7:55 our pedal 7:58 before 8:03 and we'll make certain everything is 8:05 in and overlapped on the back sides make 8:09 certain that our pedal pad is 8:12 secure just like 8:18 so this guy's ready to go back in the 8:21 car and there we can see everything that 8:24 this pedal kit replaces not including of 8:27 course we didn't have a pedal Pad but so 8:29 we replaced our pedal pivot 8:32 spring pin lever roller washer and clip 8:38 with this kit which is lever roller 8:42 bearing equipped 8:45 nut pin with 8:48 circlip 8:50 spring shoulder bolt with a 8:54 nut all that is replaced with heavier 8:57 Duty items 9:00 and that pedal is 9:01 now spring 9:04 equipped all right hopefully I'm not in 9:07 your way while I'm doing all this 9:08 install but if I am I'm sorry always my 9:11 least favorite part is the the brake 9:13 pedal spring there we go got it there 9:17 and got it 9:19 there there we go Spring's good there 9:22 put our clip back in place and let's put 9:25 our bolts back in 9:34 now I'm probably to need some needle 9:36 pliers to get the cable in came out so 9:38 much easier last time I kicked the 9:40 camera over I'm sorry hopefully you guys 9:42 can still see I was able to get the 9:44 cable out of the old lever without 9:47 disconnecting it from the carburetor but 9:49 I can't get this thing in without 9:52 disconnecting it so I've got it 9:54 disconnected from our carburetor now and 9:57 let's 9:58 see 10:01 and you know what I'm going to 10:03 disconnect this lever or the spring 10:07 rather 10:08 because that just makes it so much 10:11 easier to get into and work 10:13 on there well all right well now that 10:16 we're 10:19 disconnected I can get some 10:21 slack 10:24 and insert the 10:28 cable 10:31 needl nose pliers might do some 10:33 helps there we go 10:36 beautiful all right that's set let me go 10:39 hook up the uh throttle cable at the 10:42 carburetor there we 10:46 go and I can't push this and pull that 10:50 at the same time so let me film that 10:53 make sure that we're getting a full 10:58 throttle 11:02 that's floored that arm should be all 11:04 the way pulled down basically uh 11:07 perpendicular to the car or parallel 11:09 with the the ground 11:14 anyway much more secure much more 11:17 surefooted is I guess probably the best 11:20 thing I can 11:21 say super super 11:23 nice all right that works now that I've 11:26 got everything back in place there I 11:28 will 11:29 reattach our clutch cable and button up 11:32 this 11:33 tunnel I like to take the pedal pad and 11:36 roll it up underneath there 11:39 but a 11:42 very solid 11:44 smooth accelerator pedal it's also a 11:47 good upgrade for those guys that you 11:49 lost your accelerator pedal lever I love 11:52 clutch cable access plates and now you 11:54 can see why see how easy it is to uh 11:55 patch a clutch 11:57 cable 11:59 just like that anyway as I was saying 12:02 it's a great kit for those that somebody 12:04 may have swapped out your pedal assembly 12:07 to a roller pedal and you want to go 12:09 back to a stock 12:11 pedal as long as they didn't cut off the 12:14 mount at the bottom right there that's 12:16 all you need and you can go back to a 12:18 stock style accelerator pedal the rubber 12:21 pad yeah we need to replace those but 12:23 we'll get there that's all there is to 12:27 that other than now I've got go 12:29 underneath the car and reattach the 12:31 clutch cable and do all that stuff but 12:33 you guys have seen that process that's 12:36 nothing 12:37 [Music] 12:51 new I don't know at what point my 12:53 microphone stopped working in the last 12:55 segment of video or like actually 12:57 technically three segments of video ago 12:59 but it did I didn't catch it so I got to 13:03 go for another 13:27 Drive 13:51 super 13:54 nice I'll give a a rolling example of 13:57 why I like SB da and vacuum Advanced 13:59 Distributors this is second 14:02 gear the car is 14:05 idling and 14:07 bucking and I can just roll into the 14:12 throttle and she takes off smoothly 14:15 let's see you do that with a double on9 14:18 distributor that throttle is 14:24 just with that that's the MP 98 10 93- 14:30 upgraded accelerator pedal kit installed 14:32 pretty simple other than a little bit of 14:34 drilling and some fidgeting with that 14:36 accelerator cable to get it back in 14:37 which it's a little bit less clearance 14:39 against the tunnel versus a stock one so 14:41 it's a little bit more difficult to get 14:42 in but once it's 14:45 in it's in and on that note this is Sam 14:48 with jbugs.com saying world's full of 14:50 good people can't find one be one later 14:57 guys
