1974 VW Super Beetle

Travis Stephenson

Ever since I was 6 years old, I’ve had VW’s as a family car. My parents owned a '65 Bug and a '65 Notchback. My grandmother had an original '67 Bug that my older brother now owns, and my aunt owned a '73 Bus. I learned how to drive both a car in general, but also a manual transmission. It was the first car engine I ever worked on with my dad and brothers.

When I started a family a few years ago I wanted those same memories with my kids. The smell of a VW, stuffing someone in the cubby hole, and having your feet burnt off in the winter with the heater. I found this '74 Bug from an original owner. He was selective on who he would sell it to. We talked for a few days before I was even able to view it. Once purchased I have been working at getting her to a more original state. Finding an original '74 steering wheel in good condition has been quite the task. But that is the fun of it. My younger daughter named the car, because she had been learning about bugs in school. She said it looked like a red lady bug. And she was so excited when I brought her home. We have named her, The Lady Bug.
