1969 VW Buggy

Donna Gafton

This buggy was built by myself and my brother Dan. I'm the youngest of 3 siblings, and the only girl. I was tired of using my brother's toys when we went to Pismo or Sand Mountain. So, in 2005, when I saw a very solid 1969 VW Beetle for $200, I bought it! It was very clean, only needing the quarter pan replaced under the battery. We stripped the donor down to the rolling pan, replaced the quarter pan and shot it with some bedliner paint.

The body is a Fiberjet Rough Terrain long body that fits on a full pan. Front turn signals are recessed in the fender and it runs clear LED tail lights, that may not sound like much but this ride was built in 2007 way before you just go and get LED lights from the local O'Reilly's; they had to be special ordered from a big rig catalog. After all the body fabrication was done a make shift paint booth was erected in my brothers garage. He shot 2 coats of a metallic silver base coat, then 7 coats of candy purple with ghost flames and 4 coats of clear to finish it off. After doing the wiring, the light bar and bumpers were installed, and my brother's wife helped out with doing the upholstery work.

It's powered by a 1680cc duel port equipped with all the goodies to go play in the dunes. Rocking bolt on valve covers, a sand seal, and 40 kadrons, the trumpet exhaust rings out like a big block muscle car!

After 2 years of late nights and long weekends, we took First in Class in the maiden car show ( Bugorama 60 - yes, September 2007) ! I'm grateful to my entire family for all the work they put in to get this buggy rolling.

It's been 14 years and she still pulls in awards!
