1962 VW Dune Buggy

Bill Plumlee

Our 1962 Burro Dune Buggy was built using a 1957 VW as the donor car. It is now powered by a 1974 VW Super Beetle motor. Our nickname for the buggy is "Bobby". The dune buggy has been in our family from the beginning. It was built by a great uncle in the early sixties and another uncle purchased it from the first in the late sixties.

When I was a young teenager my uncle had a paper route and I would ride with him in the buggy and help throw the newspapers. Fun times indeed!

My uncle gifted the buggy to us this past summer. It was in really poor condition after hanging from his barn rafters for over 20 years. It became our grandfather/grandsons project with lots of new parts and hours and hours worth of elbow grease.

We’ve rebuilt the short block, added new heads, carb, starter, alternator, headers, etc. It has new brake pads, hydraulic lines, tie rods, baja side bars, seats, turning brakes, shocks, wheel bearings, master cylinder, brake reservoir, racing seats, seat belts, turning brakes, steering wheel, all new wiring, converted 6v system to 12v, dimmer switch, horn, turn signals, rear spot lights, front light bar, 12v headlight, Bluetooth stereo, GPS, speedometer, wheels and tires, fuel tank, battery, and more....
