1971 VW Super Beetle

Kris Bessette

Meet Beatrice, she is a 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle owned by Estelle, a senior at North Haven High School. Beatrice has come a VERY long way, and it has not been an easy road.

Estelle fell in love with the Beetle when she was seven years old. She grew up going to car shows with her parents. Dad formerly had a Chevy Nova and mom just always admired a beautiful classic car. When Estelle was seven, we were visiting California and took a trip to Reno and had the privilege to attend the Hot August Nights Car Show. What a show!!!! It was there, she stood next to a Volkswagen Beetle, asked mom and dad to take her picture and she said, “This is the car I want to drive when I can drive!” From there the love continued and her love grew stronger.

Since then, Ray, Estelle’s Dad, had his eye out always looking for a Beetle. Even had family members on the look out. The end of March 2019, Ray found the perfect one. He contacted a friend with a flat bed truck and they went to get it. Without a garage at our home, a temporary car port was put up in our driveway. All holiday’s & birthdays Estelle collected car parts. Mom and dad bought some too, but she had saved and put so much money into Beatrice. Everything sat in spots throughout our house, mostly in her room. She had all chrome trim, new carpet, new door panels, seat covers, new rims, and hub caps in her room for the New England Winter, because no work was happening outside then. Since day one Estelle had a plan for the paint scheme.

Beatrice is still not perfect; she gives us some engine trouble often. We are trying to work that out. But Estelle is enjoying taking her to shows, she gets a LOT of attention and has already won 3 awards in shows!!!
