1964 VW Beetle

Jason Ashworth

I acquired the "DUB" in 2021 from a friend. His grandmother purchased the car new at Victory Sales Corp. of Portsmouth, Virginia in September of 1964. The grandmother passed it down to her son and the son passed it down to the grandson, my friend.

In the early 90’s the grandson and another friend decided to make the DUB into a SCCA autocross racer. This transformation meant upgrades, the body was rested upon a 1974 IRS chassis with 1968 Karmann Ghia front disc brakes, type III rear drum brakes and a 1600cc DP engine, The car competed for many years up to the day I bought it. In fact, it received first place in its class on its last race the weekend before I took ownership.

The DUB was not in the greatest condition, but it had good bones, and I knew the history of the car’s life. This is why I decided to buy and restore it to its current condition. It was a 4-year project, and I did all the work myself, including the Dove Blue (L31) paint job. The DUB now has a new life with 4.5”/ 6” Fuchs, 4-wheel disc brakes, 2” drop spindles, and a 1835 cc engine with dual 40mm Dellorto’s.

Today, the DUB is more about the "show" than the "go". Instead of winning racing trophies in its past, she is presently winning trophies at car shows. The DUB took first place for the "Best Other" category at the 47th annual Golden Oldies Street Rod Association car show this past Labor Day weekend.

I am hoping to pass the DUB down to my son one day by keeping a tradition alive, just as my father did for me as well as the VW community and JBUGSs has been doing for all these years.
