Replace your 12 Volt generator with a modern alternator. This kit comes complete with a new aftermarket 55, 75 or 90 amp alternator (with chrome and black powdercoated options) and includes a raw, chrome or black powdercoated stand with deflect gasket, a zinc, chrome or stainless steel T-bolt strap, black or chrome 3-piece backing plate set and a new alternator fan belt (11.3x912) as your old generator belt will not work. If you are replacing a 6 Volt generator you will need a 12 volt generator/alternator pulley as well. Either way, whether you're starting from "scratch" or just replacing an antiquated generator, our Alternator Conversion Kit includes just about everything you'll need to install a high output alternator. The alternator conversion fits all 1200cc (40 horse) to 1600cc Type 1 or 2 based VW engine.

Alternators have more charging power:

• 55 amps - suitable for most VW applications
• 75 amps - added off road lights or large car stereo amplifiers, etc
• 90 amps - added off road lights & large stereo amplifiers, etc

VW 12 volt generators only produce 30 amps of power in Type 1 applications or 38 amps in Type 2 Bus models. A 6 volt generator puts out a little more power at 45 amps, but even that is still 10 amps less than the standard alternator included in our alternator conversion kit. The AL82NEC aftermarket alternator provides 55 amps of power which is typically more than enough for most all VW applications. If you're looking for more power to run car stereo amplifiers or off road lights, we offer 75 amp alternators and if you think you may need more than that, we even have 90 amp alternators. The 55 amp aftermarket and Bosch (which is an aftermarket unit in a Bosch box, as Bosch no longer manufactures them) alternators have a raw aluminum housing. The 75 and 90 amp alternators are either chrome plated or black powdercoated.

Whether you're just looking to get your old generator swapped out so you can get your VW back on the road, or you're wanting to dress up your engine a bit while you're installing a new alternator, we've got you covered. Our alternator conversion kit is customizeable from top to bottom so you get to pick out the pieces that you want. After you select which alternator you want, choose the backing plates, stand and the strap that you want.

Want it "all" new?

• Add crank & alternator pulleys, pulley hardware, shims & belt
• Steel or aluminum, black, chrome or CNC anodized
• Zinc, chrome or stainless steel strap

Upgrade the alternator conversion kit with your choice of stock style pulleys in black or chrome, 5 hole aluminum in polished or black with timing marks, or CNC aluminum black, blue or red anodized. No matter which option you choose you'll get a new alternator pulley with shims, spacer and nut, along with a new crankshaft pulley, bolt and washer.

Replacing your fan too?

• Narrow (30mm) wide fan for upright cooler and fan shroud equipped engines
• Wide (36mm) wide fan for "doghouse" cooler and fan shroud equipped engines
• Fan hub kit - hub, washer & nut

Removing the original fan from your old generator or alternator can sometimes be difficult, or if your fan or the fan mounting hardware happened to disappear at some point, you can add new pieces to complete the alternator fan assembly. Add the fan hardware only if you're re-using your original fan, or add a new fan and the hub to have just about everything you'll need to complete the alternator and fan assembly.

What else do I need?

We can only add so many parts to a "kit" before our server can't build the hundreds of thousands of variants so we had to draw the line somewhere and this is it. An oil filler needs to be threaded into the stand to finish off the installation. We have a number of options listed at this link below:

That's about it! Not every build is the same, but short of a few pieces of simple metric hardware (listed below) that you may already have in a bin or bucket will be needed to secure the stand to the case and the backing plates to the alternator. Otherwise, our fully customizeable Alternator Conversion Kit has everything you'll need to swap out a generator to an alternator!

These alternators are internally regulated!

• If your VW has an externally regulated alternator, it will not be reused and your wiring must be modified.
• If your VW has a generator, the original voltage regulator for it must be removed and the wiring for it must be modified.
