1966 VW Beetle

Tim Johnston

I have owned my Bug, Lucille, for over 41 years and am the second registered owner of this car. This was my first car as a teenager. I was fifteen years old when I purchased it from my friend's sister in 1984. She inherited it from her late grandfather a year or two earlier and never titled it properly. She blew the original 1300 motor and put in a 1600 DP and just wanted to get her money back. I paid her $275.00 for the car and have owned it since then.

I drove it through high school and this was the primary car for my wife and I for the first two years after we married in 1991.

In 1995, I dismantled the car in preparation for restoration and soon found that my wife was expecting our first child. The project was placed on hold and 3 years later, my son was born. We pushed, pulled, and dragged this Bug through 3 home purchases, cross country relocations for work and finally, when our youngest was off the payroll in 2020, I set out to finally complete the full restoration of my beloved Beetle affectionately known as "Lucille".

I am now in my early fifties and live in the Central Valley area of California with my wife of 35 years and Lucile, my other love of 41 years.
