1976 VW Super Beetle Convertible

Troy Cunningham

I was a late bloomer and didn't attend college until my early 50's. When I graduated, I had decided to make a wish come true for me. Since I was in elementary school, I knew I wanted a VW convertible. It was something that I had my heart set on but with work, kids, and life, it never happened. But graduating college later in life afforded me the opportunity to fulfill my dream.

I saw this car in an ad and fell instantly in love with it. It was so well cared for and recently restored. I don’t know much about mechanics and wanted to learn but didn’t want the car to just sit in pieces in the garage while I learned.

This car belonged to a high school senior. She was graduating and hoping to become a stock car driver. She needed to sell the car to pay for the stock car. She loved this car and named her Phoebe. She asked if I would continue to call her Phoebe. I have. The day I drove away with Phoebe, the gal just sobbed, the kind of sobbing that is a shoulder sob. I felt bad… but kept going.

I have stayed in touch with the gal ever since. I share with her any upgrades I make and give her progress updates to Phoebe’s condition. This gal and her dad did most of the restoration years ago and I’ve worked to keep Phoebe running well and with new little upgrades along the way. The latest upgrade was the whitewall tires, cream rims, beauty rings, and Wolfsburg hubcaps. They just took her look to another level. My next project will be working on bumpers a bit, restoring the dashboard further, and updating the carpet.
