This rear main seal is the primary barrier that prevents oil from leaking out the center bore where the crankshaft meets the case halves on 25 and 36 horse (1100cc and 1200cc, respectively) Volkswagen engines. It fits 1954 to 1960 Standard Beetle, 1956 to 1960 Karmann Ghia, and 1955 to 1960 Type 2 (Bus) models. Located behind the flywheel, this seal is not accessible without removing the engine from the car.
Please Note: If you have issues with a slipping clutch, take a quick look under the car where the engine case meets the transaxle bell housing. If you can see fluid or oil leaking from the mating surface, there is a good chance your rear main seal has failed and needs to be replaced.
