EMPI's Black Piston Cylinder Tins (aka cooling tins) are a reproduction
of the tins Volkswagen installed over the push rods tubes and cylinders
on Type 3 (Notchback, Squareback, Fastback) engines. The tins can be
used on all 40 HP/1200cc to 1600cc engines. They fit 1961-1977 Standard
Beetle, 1971-1979 Super Beetle, 1961-1974 Karmann Ghia, 1960-1971 Type 2
(Bus), 1962-1973 Type 3 (Notchback, Squareback, Fastback), and
1973-1974 Thing models. Though the tins are an essential part of the
cooling system in the Type 3 platform, they provide no additional
cooling when used on stock Type 1 engines (found in Bug, Super Beetle,
Karman Ghia, and Thing models). (Reference, Part Number 113 119 451D)
There is debate among engine builders and VW enthusiasts as to the benefit of installing these tins. We believe that they slow air flow around the lower half of the cylinders, causing cylinder temperatures to rise. We do not recommend them on any daily driver or street-use Type 1s or 2s.
If you want to properly cool your cylinders we recommend you use a Cylinder Deflector Tins (PN:311119317A). On the other hand, Cylinder Piston Cooling Tins were OEM for Type 3 engines, and can be used purely for aesthetics on Type 1 engines. However they do not provide any additional cooling when used on stock Type 1 engines.
