This brand new 12 volt starter is made by Bosch and is the stock replacement for 1967-1977 Beetle, 1971-1979 Super Beetle, 1967-1974 Karmann Ghia, 1967-1975 Bus, and 1967-1973 Type 3 models. It is compatible with manual transmissions when using a 12 volt, 200mm flywheel. The starter arrives ready to install with the solenoid pre-installed and the bendix in place, so you do not need to transplant any parts from your old unit. 12 volt starters have a 25mm diameter, 9 tooth gear. The starter bushing is not included and should be replaced any time you install a new starter.
This starter does not have the catch for the D-bolt. Installation will require two people, or you will have to grind down the housing to work with the D-bolt. We have several other options that work with the D-bolt, like the OE casting P/N SR15NEC or P/N 111911023.
If you are in the process of converting a 1966 or earlier Volkswagen to a 12 volt vehicle, do not change your starter to a 12 volt starter unless you know for certain you have a 12 volt flywheel. Only swap to a 12 volt starter if you have swapped out your flywheel to a 12 volt, 200mm flywheel, or if you have changed the engine in your original 6 volt car to an engine with a 12 volt flywheel.
If you are installing a 12 volt starter in a transmission from a 6 volt car, you will need the conversion starter bushing: P/N 4027.

If you absolutely insist that you have a "Bosch" starter, then this is the starter to get. This starter is made in China for Bosch. We have other options that perform just as well, if not better, and they have the correct casting to work with the OE D bolt. To make this work correctly, the D bolt tab should be ground, cut or milled down to allow a D bolt to key into it. If you insist on a Bosch starter, this is the way to go. Otherwise, the other options cost less, are easier to install, and will perform just as well. If your starter isn't working, make sure you have a good battery and the cables (the positive cable, the negative ground to chassis cable and the transmission to chassis ground strap) are in good condition. Additionally, make sure the wire from your ignition switch to the starter is not disconnected or corroded and the ignition switch is working properly.
