AA assembled one of the best piston and cylinder kit combinations possible for those building a performance engine for their 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 liter Type 4 engines. The engines were originally used in 1972 through 1979 Type 2 Bus models, 1980-1983 Vanagons and Porsche 914s. The 34.6mm offset means the slightly larger than stock pistons and cylinders can be used with 71 to 78mm stroker crankshafts. The JE forged aluminum alloy pistons feature flat tops with cut out valve reliefs. For better cooling, and lighter weight, the biral cylinders feature cast iron sleeves and aluminum fins for a roughly 6 pound weight savings. The 96mm pistons and cylinders install in 1.8 and 2.0 liter Type 4 engines with no machine work required. They will install in a 1.7 engine case, but the 1.7 liter heads will have to be opened up for the larger sleeves.
