EMPI has heard the complaints about all the aftermarket engine tin and has responded. They started with their most popular fan shroud, and started from scratch. After extensive 3D & CAD modelling and real world flow testing, they have release a shroud that flows more air than OE or prior EMPI shrouds and fits better than the aftermarket shrouds.
The EMPI 36 horsepower styled, 1300-1600cc fan shroud was designed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and empirical flow bench testing to ensure a better cooling fan shroud. Air enters the Super Shroud by first passing by an air velocity ring to increase air flow going into the shroud. Like a velocity stack on your carburetor, the rings were originally used by Porsche on their 356 fan shrouds for improved cooling. The air can be pulled into the shroud with either an early, 30mm upright fan or a later, 36mm doghouse fan. Both will fit the new Super Shroud.
Inside the EMPI Super Shroud, new fin designs and placements evenly direct the air to the 1-2 and the 3-4 cylinders and heads. This is an improvement over even original fan shrouds which favor the 1-2 side, and EMPI's fin design out flows the OE shrouds on both sides for better cooling. Before the air can pass over the heads and cylinders, it get's directed through extended cooling fin tips. The fins were designed to replicate the thermostat style vanes in the open position.
To finish things off, the fitment of the Super Shroud has been designed for a better fit on both OEM and bubbletop engine cases as well as to the engine tin pieces versus prior EMPI shrouds. The fan shroud has been cleared of unnecessary holes and the alternator (or generator) backing plate mounting inserts are aligned horizontally for a better overall look.
This VW fan shroud is designed for 1300-1600cc Type 1, engines with an upright oil cooler. This fan shround is offered in semi-gloss black or chrome and without heat as there are no heater duct outlets. With an air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the fan shroud is very important. The fan pulls in air while the shroud creates a channeling effect to disperse it towards the oil cooler, cylinder heads, pistons & cylinders.
NOTE: "36 Horse" only refers to the style and shape of the fan shroud. The EMPI Super Shroud is made for 1300-1600cc Type 1 based aircooled engines. In our opinion, the best fitting engine tin is the original fan shroud, but it does not work with dual carburetors and it is not made new. This is a good alternative, especially for those with no other options.
