More About Our VW Transmission Parts:
The Volkswagen Bug, Karmann Ghia and Type 3 were made with a Swing Axle Transmission until 1968. The 1969 and later models were made with Independent Rear Suspension (IRS). The IRS was implemented in the Bus in 1968. Autostick Volkswagen's are another exception and were always built with an IRS.
A swing axle is type of independent suspension that allows your wheel is to react to irregularities of road surfaces independently. The Volkswagen Beetle was among the first vehicle to use the swing axle.
Volkswagens with Independent Rear Suspension use CV Joints at the ends on the rear axles and allow the drive shaft to transmit power through a variable angle without a significant increase in friction.
