The VW Rear Main Crankshaft Seal installs into the engine case behind the flywheel. It seals the flywheel to the engine case and crankshaft to keep debris out and oil in. The rear main seal fits 1972 through 1979 Type 2 Bus models, 1980 through 1991 Vanagons and 1986 through 1991 Syncros.



Beginner Tips:

When you are replacing a clutch or doing a major engine overhaul on your VW Bus we highly recommend replacing the Rear Main Seal. The seal is one of the more common seals to cause oil leaks on your VW. If you've pulled your engine and noticed engine oil in the bell housing or on the clutch, chances are the Rear Main Seal needs to be replaced.
