The Bosch 04038 VW Ignition Rotor installs on to the the distributor, inside the cap. The rotor spins around inside the cap where it contacts the center post which gets power from the coil and sends it to the individual spark plug wires on the cap. The rotor fits the Bosch 0231022009 Distributor as well as 1980 through 1985 Vanagons.

In July of 1984 (7/84) VW changed the Distributor in Vanagons. Up until that point the distributor cap posts have open sockets (no internal post or pin). To determine if you need the pre 1984 or 1984 and later components, look at the distributor posts. No pin means 1984 and earlier components. A pin in the socket indicates 1984 and later components.

Please note that the fitments listed are for what VW originally equipped the model listed with. It is very possible that after 40 years, the distributor may have been changed so we recommend verifying your distributor before ordering any distributor parts.

Beginner Tips:

The VW Distributor Rotor is an often neglected component of ignition system. The contacts on the rotor can corrode over time, carbon can build up on it as well and cause misfires. We typically replace the rotor every 15,000 miles as cheap insurance.
