The VW Headlight Switch installs into the dash with a 10mm dash nut escutcheon and has a 5mm threaded post for a knob (sold separately, available above). The headlight
knob has 3 positions (off / parking-running lights / headlights-running lights) as well as a rheostat control (twist the knob at the second or third position) to dim or
brighten the dash lights. The headlight switch fits 1971 through 1979 Type 2 Bus models and 1973 to 1974 Things.

Replacing the Headlight Switch (and most all the VW Switches) is very simple. The headlight terminals are numbered, their designations are:
30 - Battery Power from the Fuse Box
- 2nd 30 terminal not used
56 - Power to Headlight Relay
58 - Power to the Running Light Terminal on the Fuse Box
X - Power from the Ignition Switch
58b - Power to the Dash Bulbs
If the switch has the terminals 58L and 58R,
they are not used. (The are powered on at first on position only)
VW Factory Color Coding:
30 - Red
56 - White or White w/Black Stripe
58 - Grey
58b - White w/Red Stripe
X - Red w/Black Stripe at Headlight Switch. Changes to Black w/Yellow Stripe at Ignition Switch
