The VW Windshield Seal Cal Look Seal Fits 1968-79 Bus Type 2 models.

Our Cal-Look Window Seals are made to our specifications in modern tooling with rubber compounds that are far better than original. We have extended the outer lip of the seal to cover the corners and prevent the dreaded "curling" you see on other seals. These seals are guaranteed to fit and carry our Lifetime Guarantee. The Cal-Look seal does not accept window trim or chrome inserts.

This is an extruded rubber seal. This seal does not have molded corners.

Our Expert's Take:

We spent years developing a better seal and have tested hundreds of different length seals to find a balance of an extruded (not molded) seal that fits the glass and doesn't curl up in the corners like so many other suppliers seals do. For this reason some people install our seals and think they are too big. If you simply start at one edge, and stretch the seal in place all the way around, you will end up with a very loose seal. Rubber stretches AND compresses. If you get to the last few inches of glass and have "extra" rubber, work and push the seal BACK on the glass, opposite of the direction you stretched it on. Concentrate on leaving the seal "loose" in the corners and compressed in the flat areas.

Cal Look versus American Look: There is really only one difference between “American Look” and “Cal Look” window seals. American Look seals have a groove in the rubber to accept the aluminum window molding found on deluxe Beetle models. The original standard VWs did not have fancy trim or chrome components, but pretty much all VW Beetles imported into the US were deluxe models that included these feaetures. So, the rubber seals used on them are referred to as American Look these days. Cal Look just means the window seal doesn’t have that groove. Eliminating the shiny trim around the windows and other chrome components gives the car a completely different look, a style custom cars guys in the ‘60s referred to as Cal Look.

Helpful Hints

Tip 1:
When installing any extruded seal (a seal that has a glued or vulcanized seam) it is highly recommended to put the seam at the bottom center of the window. If the seam is installed in a corner the seam can split because of the seal expanding and contracting with temperature changes. If the seal can't be installed at the bottom center, make sure to put it on a straight edge of the window. Failure to do so will void the warranty on the seal.

Tip 2:
"Gripper Teeth", "Blow-Out Strips", and "Alligator Teeth" can be found on various 1973-on VW models. These metal clips have many names but regardless of what you call them they must be removed prior to installing your new windshield seal. VW originally offered these clips at a time when not everyone wore seatbelts. These teeth were designed to hold the windshield in place, and keep the driver from going through the vehicle in a collision. Unfortunately, this also meant that since the windshield did not give, oftentimes the driver/passengers heads would smash against the retained glass. That is the reason modern cars manufactured do not have these clips. Drivers today know seatbelts save lives.

There are no windshield seals made that accommodate these clips. Removing the clips is a fairly easy procedure, but it can chip the paint so we recommend doing this before painting your vehicle. The clips can be chiseled off. Alternatively, you can also drill through the spot welds to remove them. Although this area will be covered up with your new seal, we recommend touching up the removed clip mounts with some paint to prevent rust before installing your new windshield.
