EMPI VW Crank Pulley - Bolt-In Sand Seal - Black Anodized

Customize your Volkswagen with EMPI's "Bolt-in" style Sand Seal Black Anodized VW Crank Pulley that has the timing marks laser engraved around the edge of the pulley. The crankshaft pulley fits 1200cc (40 Horsepower) to 1600cc Type 1 and 2 engines and features a stylish 5 hole design and comes with a heavy duty crankshaft seal. To prevent seal wear, the pulley has a stainless steel collar at the snout.

The "Bolt-in" aluminum collar requires a longer snout on the pulley which spaces it further away from the engine case. The pulley must be used with longer crankshaft bolt (linked here) and the included spacer to prevent the pulley from hitting the collar. An upper pulley spacer is included to keep the pulleys in line.

The "Bolt-in" sand seal comes with an aluminum collar that must be glued into place, more appropriately maybe it should be called a "Glue-in" sand seal kit. Gasgacinch or other similar sealants work well for installing the collar. Additionally, having the collar swedged by a muffler shop so it fits in the case snuggly can help to ensure a tighter fit.

The seal inside the collar has a 2.26" OD and a 1.665 ID. Sand Seals are intended to keep debris out of the engine at the crankshaft. They are NOT an oil seal for the crankshaft. If you have oil leaking from the crankshaft, the crankcase pressure is too high. The issue could be improper crankcase venting or an indicator of an internal issue such as worn piston rings, too much oil pressure, etc.

The outer diamter of this pulley is roughly 6 3/4"/171mm. Coupled with a standard upper pulley with an outer diameter of 4.25"/108mm the pulley ratio would be approximately 1 to 1.58, meaning the fan will turn 1.58 times every time the cranks makes one full revolution which is less than the factory ratio of 1.69.
