EMPI 2 Barrel Progressive Carburetor Kit for Classic VWs
EMPI's 32/36F Progressive 2 Barrel Carburetor Kit offers the best of performance and economy for your VW. The carburetor features a 32mm primary barrel for cruising and when you step on it a second 36mm barrel opens progressively to offer more performance. The carburetor kit includes the 32/36F carburetor with linkage kit and electric choke, a chrome air cleaner assembly with gauze filter, the intake manifold (for use with single or dual port end castings), fuel line and mounting hardware. The progressive carburetor kit fits Type 1 1300-1600 based engines. We recommend the carburetors for displacements up to 1700cc. The carburetors are test run and adjusted for smooth performance out of the box. The new design intake manifold has a stock style mount at the bottom to bolt the the case stud to appease those that don't like running the additional brace. Please Note: Unfortunately with the redesign came some oversights and due to manufacturing variances and the supplier wanting to either fit all possible stroker engine combinations, or simply not checking the reproduction manifold on a stock engine, the tubes on the intakes manifold and the heat riser will have to be trimmed, and the aluminum casting will have to be cut back prior to installation. Further, the heat riser hole in the manifold is not drilled all the way through so if you want the heat risers to operate properly, the manifold will have to be drilled from side to side to open up the passage.
Trimming Recommendations:48mm (1 7/8") off the 3-4 (left) side intake tube
48mm (1 7/8") off the 3-4 (left) side heat riser tube
30mm (1 1/8") off the 3-4 (left) intake manifold heat riser base
We whole heartedly wish this wasn't the case but until the supplier runs through their incorrect stock or demands a better product, this is what is available to the industry. We are working as hard as possible to find another solution but for now trimming is required. We use a pipe cutter (the intake tube is 1 3/8" diameter) for the cleanest cut on the tubes, but you can use a sawzall, hack saw, cut off wheel, etc.
Wherever you source your intake manifold, make sure you check the fitment! The cross tube from end casting to end casting should be measure roughly 16.75" to 17.75" across. The variation being that the intake manifold can and should slightly enter into each end casting.
It is NOT uncommon for the carburetor to come into contact SLIGHTLY with an alternator equipped engine. The alternator can be clearanced or a spacer (17-2980) can be used to lift the carb. For years, simply clearancing the alternator was the solution, but the spacer is nice for those that don't have access to a file, grinder, etc.

The Progressive Carburetor choke and adjustment screws will sit against the fan shroud making adjustment difficult!
This is the way the carburetor was adapted to fit as it was never intended for use on a VW engine. The choke element has an electric power supply, make sure that the wire is insulated from the fan shroud and make sure that the wire is fused! Again, keep in mind that all of the idle adjustments are against the fan shroud and can be difficult to access with the carburetor installed. If you want an economical carb with the performance of the progressive carburetor barrels, this is the only choice.
If you want a bit more performance and easy access to the adjustments, consider the EMPI 38 EGAS Carburetor which has 2 barrels that open synchronously.
