EMPI's bolt on full flow filter kit includes a specially machined return line adapter which installs into the oil pressure relief valve at the bottom of the engine (below the distributor).
This adapter allows a modified oil pump to pump oil out of the included aluminum oil pump cover, fittings and hoses to the included oil filter adapter and back into the case at the return line.
The bolt on full flow filter kit keeps the existing stock oil cooler (which we alway recommend as the stock cooler has a fan cooling it whenever the engine is running) and allows the oil system
to run externally but in conjuction with the engine case and stock oil system. The output port for the existing oil pump needs to be threaded and plugged (which requires removing, then
reinstalling the existing oil pump) to complete full flow system. The full flow filter kit is recommend only for use with dual relief 1971 and later Type 1 engine cases but can be used on 1967
through 1974 Standard Beetle, 1967 through 1974 Karmann Ghia and 1973 through 1974 Thing models without EGR filters.
